Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal arrested; AAP in crisis

Kathmandu: India’s financial crime agency has arrested Delhi Chief Minister (CM) Arvind Kejriwal. The crime agency arrested Kejriwal in charge of corruption allegations of policies related to alcohol sales.

According to BBC, Police surrounded Kejriwal’s residence on Thursday. The members of the Enforcement Directorate agency searched his house.

Kejriwal and his party Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is also an opposition party, have denied the charges and claimed the charges were politically motivated. But AAP seems to be in crisis with the arrest of Kejriwal.

AAP claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party, played dirty politics. The Party will seek an urgent hearing at the Supreme Court for Kejriwal’s release.

AAP has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of misusing government agencies for political ends. AAP Chief Whip Dilip Pandey said that Modi was scared of Kejriwal.

Delhi government implemented an alcohol sale policy in 2022. This ended the government’s monopoly. The case alleges that the policy gave extreme advantage to private sellers. Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia were other AAP leaders, to be arrested in the same case, last year.

Kejriwal has been arrested in the mouth of upcoming general elections. The elections will take place in seven phases in April and May. The results of the election will be announced on 4th June.
