Rahul Gandhi appeals against jail sentence verdict in ‘Modi’ defamation case

Kathmandu: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has filed an appeal against the decision of jail sentence in a criminal defamation case on Monday.

A court in Gujarat has accepted the petition and had posted a hearing for April 13.

A court in Gujarat had condemned Gandhi to two years in jail after finding him guilty of defaming the surname of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a speech in 2019.

The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail on 23rd March.

Gandhi’s lawyer Kriti Panwala said that the aim of the speech was not of defaming millions of people having the same last name.

Gandhi questioned how all the thieves had the last name Modi during the speech. A lawyer from the Bharatiya Janata Party had filed a case against Gandhi claiming that he had defamed the Modi community.

The parliament of India also disqualified Gandhi after the court decided to sentence two years of jail.
