Gujrat court condemns Rahul Gandhi to two years jail

Kathmandu: An Indian court in Gujrat state has condemned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail.  The court found Gandhi guilty in the criminal defamation case.

Despite the verdict, Gandhi won’t go to jail instantly, he received bail for 30 days. The door for Gandhi to make an appeal against the judgment is still open.

According to BBC, Gandhi was present in the court hearing on Thursday.

The court convicted Gandhi for his comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last name in 2019.

He had given a speech in Karnataka state, before the upcoming 2019 general election, raising the question of why the last name of all the thieves was Modi.

Gandhi’s target in the speech was understood to be former Indian Premier League IPL Chief Lalit Modi and Diamond Tycooon Nirav Modi as per the media reports of the time.

A lawmaker from Bharatiya Janata Party, Purnesh Modi, had filed a complaint against Gandhi mentioning the defamation of the entire Modi community due to his comments.

Although the Congress party had tweeted mentioning going for an appeal against the verdict, Gandhi had remained silent regarding the judgment.

But Gandhi tweeted one of the famous quotes of Mahatma Gandhi,’ My religion is based upon truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Non-violence is the means of realizing Him.’
