Disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the parliament

Kathmandu: Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from parliament.

Gandhi, who was found guilty in a defamation case on Thursday, lost his parliamentary position today.

The Parliament of India Lok Sabha Secretariat published a notice mentioning the cancelation of the parliamentary position of Gandhi on Friday.

Rahul had won the seat for parliament from Wayanad, Kerala.

As per the Representation of the People Act, 1951, of the Indian Constitution, any politician can be disqualified if he\she found guilty of any offense and had been condemned to imprisonment for not less than two years.

A court in Gujarat condemned Gandhi to 2 years in prison on Thursday. There is a provision for Gandhi to appeal for justice in the upper-level court within 30 days.

Gandhi raised the question that why the last name of every criminal was Modi during a pre-election speech in 2019. He had targeted a few people having Modi surname including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A lawmaker from Bharatiya Janata Party, Purnesh Modi, had filed a complaint against Gandhi mentioning the defamation of the entire Modi community due to his comments.
