Indian wrestlers commence protest for arrest of Singh in sexual harassment case

Kathmandu: Indian wrestlers have commenced another protest, demanding the arrest of the sport’s governing body’s former chief, in the sexual abuse case.

Athletes in the demonstration had been demanding the arrest of the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Singh, and other officials in the sexual harassment case of women athletes.

The athletes have claimed that the officials had been sexually harassing women wrestlers for years.

The athletes halted the demonstration in January, upon the promise of the government for conducting an investigation into the case.

Vinesh Phogat, a two-time world champion Indian wrestler, claimed that Singh had sexually violated about 10 female wrestlers in January.

The federal government suspended Singh from the position after the protests attracted international concerns. A committee had also been formed for the investigation of the case, which submitted the report in April. The report has not yet been revealed.

According to BBC, the wrestlers said that seven women athletes had filed separate complaints against Singh. They have been demanding the government for disclosing the investigative report of the committee.

The wrestlers had been sleeping in the open area continuing the protest.
