Double-amputee Magar attempting to scale Mt. Everest

Kathmandu: Double-amputee Hari Budha Magar set out for Solukhumbu in his attempt to scale the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest.

Magar, the ex-British Gurkha, flew to Solukhumbu from Tribhuvan International Airport today.

According to Department for Tourism Director General Hom Prasad Luintel, Magar completed all required processes for acquiring the climbing permission for the Mt. Everest expedition.

He will be climbing on his artificial legs. Magar is reported to be the world’s first person with artificial legs to perform skydiving from the Everest base camp. BBC also covered the training of Magar.

General Luintel added that Magar had been trying to get the expedition permit for a long wait and he was excited for the adventurous journey ahead.

Magar had waited five years for getting permission to climb Mt. Everest. The duration of his expedition will be of 2 months.

Magar had lost his both legs in the 2010 Afghanistan war. He had already successfully climbed Mont Blanc (4,810 meters), Chulu Far East (6,059 meters), Kilimanjaro (5,895), and Mera Peak (6,476).
