Aung San Suu Kyi’s son Kim urges military to release his mother

Kathmandu: Kim Aris, the youngest son of expelled leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has urged the military to free his mother from prison.

According to BBC, in an exclusive interview, Kim said that he could not let his mother suffer in prison.

Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years of imprisonment after a coup collapsed her government in 2021.

He said that the government or military had not informed him regarding the health of his mother. Kim disclosed not getting a positive response from the Burmese Embassy, the International Red Cross Society, and the British Foreign Office.

Kim even disclosed his urge of avoiding media regarding the issue. This is the first time that Kim had spoken to international media. He was also silent when his mother was detained between 1989 and 2010.

Kim said that he wanted to stay away from politics but the unaware condition of his mother triggered him to raise his voice.

The collapse of the government resulted in the civil war in Myanmar in 2021. Ten of thousands of people have lost their lives since the collapse.

Suu Kyi was honored with the Nobel peace prize. She is even taken as a global icon of democracy. Her release from detention in 2010 was celebrated by Myanmar and the world.
