Kathmandu: Five foreign militants were killed in a gunfight near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara district, the Indian police said on Friday.
The militants were killed in a joint operation by the Army and the police. ‘Five foreign terrorists killed in #encounter. Search in the area is going on: ADGP Kashmir,” the Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.
In an earlier tweet, the police had said that a gunfight had started between militants and the joint team of forces in the Jumagund area near the Line of Control in Kupwara.
Police said the gunfight started when the joint Army and police team launched an anti-militancy operation following intelligence inputs from the police about militants trying to cross the border.
Meanwhile, a massive search and combing operation is underway in the area. The ongoing encounter is part of a series of counter-infiltration operations foiled by the security forces in recent.
On Thursday, Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Poonch sector and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition. On June 13, two terrorists were neutralised in a joint operation of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in the border area of Kupwara district.
Since February, 10 major infiltration attempts have been foiled across the Line of Control by Indian security forces.
