Vikram Misri issues statement regarding Trump-Modi telephonic conversation

Kathmandu: President of the United States, Donald Trump, held a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, issued a video statement on Wednesday regarding the telephone conversation between the two leaders.

Foreign Secretary Misri shed light on the scheduled meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, which was supposed to take place on the sidelines of the 7th Summit. However, President Trump had to return to the U.S. early, as the meeting could not happen.

The Foreign Secretary said upon President Trump’s request, the two leaders spoke over the phone on Wednesday. He said the conversation lasted for approximately thirty-five minutes.

‘President Trump had called Prime Minister Modi to offer his condolences and express support in the fight against terrorism, after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, ‘ Foreign Secretary Misri said, ‘This was their first conversation since then. Therefore, Prime Minister Modi spoke in detail with President Trump about Operation Sindoor.’

In the phone conversation, Prime Minister Modi told President Trump that after April 22, India had made it known to the entire world that it was determined to act against terrorism. He said that on the night of May 6, India had targeted only terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. India’s actions were very measured, precise, and non-escalatory.

At the same time, India made it clear that it would respond to Pakistan’s bullets with shells.

On the night of May 9, Vice President Vance had called Prime Minister Modi. The Vice President had warned that Pakistan might carry out a major attack on India. Prime Minister Modi had clearly stated that if such an attack happened, India would respond even more strongly.

On the night of May 9–10, India gave a very strong response to Pakistan’s attack and inflicted heavy damage on Pakistan’s air capabilities, rendering its military air bases inoperable. Due to India’s decisive retaliation, Pakistan had to request India to stop further military action.

In the video, the Foreign Secretary Misri said, ‘Prime Minister Modi told President Trump that during this entire sequence of events, there was never any discussion — at any level — about a U.S.–India trade deal or U.S. mediation between India and Pakistan.’

The conversation about halting military operations happened directly between the Indian and Pakistani militaries through existing channels, and only at Pakistan’s request.

‘Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India has never accepted any mediation, does not accept it, and never will. On this issue, there is complete political consensus within India,’ said the Foreign Secretary in the video message.

President Trump understood the details shared by the Prime Minister and expressed his support for India’s fight against terrorism. Prime Minister Modi also stated that India now sees terrorism not as a proxy war but as a full-fledged war, and that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing.

Misri said, ‘President Trump asked Prime Minister Modi if he could stop over in the U.S. on his return from Canada. Due to his tightly scheduled commitments, Prime Minister Modi expressed his inability to do so. Both leaders then agreed to meet shortly.’

President Trump and Prime Minister Modi also discussed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. They both agreed that direct dialogue between the two sides is essential for peace and that efforts must continue in that direction.

The two leaders also exchanged perspectives on the regional situation and affirmed their support for QUAD’s important role in the region. Prime Minister Modi invited President Trump to visit India for the next QUAD meeting. President Trump accepted the invitation and said he is looking forward to visiting India.

US President Trump and Indian PM Modi attended the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15 to 17.
