Parbati Joshi: First Nepali Woman to Summit Mt. Everest without Sherpa Support

Kathmandu: Breaking the common saying “Need a Sherpa to ascend Mt. Everest”, Parbati Joshi created history by climbing Mt. Everest, for the first time, without the support of a Sherpa.

On May 19, 2025, Parbati, a resident of Rasuwa Aamachhodingmo Rural Municipality–4, became the first female to step onto 8848 meters high Mt. Everest without the support of a Sherpa. She also became the first woman of Rasuwa District to climb the Mt. Everest.

Parbati’s journey was not only an ascent, but was a dream. The dream, which she accomplished with confidence, courage, and tireless preparation.

Parbati, born on December 24, 1992, was a sports lover since her childhood. She was an excellent volleyball player. And was also part of the national-level tournament. ‘When I was playing volleyball and used to running, the nearest Mountain always attracted me,’ said Parbati.

Passionate about trekking, she became a trekking guide. She is currently working with the Intrepid Travel Agency as a certified guide and a team leader.

During the phase of trekking, she experienced many mountaineering scenes. This path inspired her to dive into mountaineering. She completed her basic mountaineering training in 2016. Prabati said, ‘When I took the training in mountaineering, then I felt–Now I can also climb Mt. Everest.’ She completed her advanced course in 2020.

Parbati began her journey from Kathmandu on April 20, 2025. And she stepped her foot in the peak of Mt. Everest on May 19. She reached Kathmandu on May 24, 2025.

During this whole journey, she didn’t take the help of any Sherpa. She completely relied on her decision, ascent strategy, and courage. And created history to become a source of inspiration for all Nepali women.
