Sunkoshi-Marin Multipurpose Diversion Project progressing at snail’s pace

Kathmandu: The work on the Sunkoshi-Marin Multipurpose Diversion Project is progressing at a snail’s pace.

The project, initiated to provide year-round irrigation facilities to approximately 122,000 hectares of land in the Madhesh Province districts of Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, and Bara, and generating 31.7 megawatts of electricity, has not yet crossed even 10 percent construction progress, despite being inaugurated four years ago.

Last month, Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, instructed the contracting company to find solutions to expedite the sluggish project and complete it quickly.

Although the tunnel excavation was completed under the first contract awarded in 2021, the construction of the headworks is still progressing slowly. The deadline set for the completion of the headworks is 2027.
