Kathmandu: Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has demolished the Ward Office building to preserve the historical Malla period Nhu Pukhu (Naya Pokhari) located at Ward 5.

Lalitpur Metropolitan City Police Chief Sitaram Hachhethu said the premises of the ward office, including the concrete shed, were demolished with the help of dozers on Monday.

LMC demolished the building’s premises for the preservation of the heritage of Nhu Pukhu. Similarly, LMC also spilled water on the roads to prevent the blowing of dust while demolishing the structures.

The traditional pond was built for groundwater recharge. Locals believe the pond supplies water to two important aquifers Nayekhyo and Narich; which are the prime sources for various wells and stone spouts.

Modern urbanization and land encroachment degraded the pond. According to the Centre for Integrated Urban Development (CIUD), Nhu Pukhu pond dried up and almost turned into a dumping site 8 years ago.

The CIUD visited the site and created a technical design and master plan to recharge the pond, restore its condition, and ensure its long-term management.
