According to Hindu Vedic Puranas, Krishna Paksha month of Ashwin is called Pitri Pakchhya because it is an aspect of the moksha (salvation) of their deceased forefathers.

Kathmandu: Sohra Shraddha or Pitru Pakchhya, a period of 16 lunar days, has begun.

Sohra Shraddha started on Wednesday. People who don’t have parents perform Shraddha as per Tithi. But if it is not possible in Tithi, there is a tradition to perform on the last day of Aunsi.

There are 15 Tithi on the side of the lunar month. Since Shraddha is performed on 16 days from Bhadra Shukla to Asoj Krishna Aunsi it is called Sohra Shraddha.

During this period, people visit pilgrimages like Pashupatinath and Gokarneshwor to offer tarpan (water), sida dan (food), and pinda dan to their ancestors

Hindus believe that performing Sohra Shraddha will bring peace to the departed souls of all ancestors.
