Kathmandu: The reason for the outburst of the glacial lake in the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5 in Thame, Solukhumbu has been detected.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the study of the satellite images before and after the incident revealed deformation as the main reason behind the outburst of the glacial lake.
The DHM said the sudden deformation in the End Moraine of the glacial lake-1 and the upper region of glacial lake-2 is the main cause behind the explosion.
Bursting of glacial lakes results in Thame’s flood
The Department said just a few days before the incident, the rainfall and increase in temperature melted the upper peripheral region of Thame, in Syangboche and Fosre, causing the melting of the glacial lake-2 which overflowed glacial lake-1.
The sudden flood in the Thame occurred on the 16th of August.
