Kathmandu: Rivers, inside the Kathmandu valley, are prone to experience increasing water levels during the monsoon every year. The incessant rainfall causes floods inside Kathmandu.

Already 3 major floods hit Kathmandu this year. There are even chances of other incidents of flood to occur inside Kathmandu.

The recent flood dumped large amounts of plastic waste on the banks of the Bagmati, Rudramati, and Bishnumati Rivers. The river brought a lot of sediments, during the time of flood. This has piled up huge debris of sediments on the banks of the rivers.

These sediments have turned the river bank messy. There are piles of garbage scattered on the banks of the river.

Despite the involvement of dozens of organizations advocating the Bagmati cleaning campaign, the garbage has gone unnoticed. It seems like those organizations and campaigners have not taken any initiatives to clean the garbage, brought by the river.

Though the government keeps introducing various plans and programs for cleaning the Bagmati, the policies do not seem to cover the sanitation of messy river banks. And few “so-called” cleaning campaigns do not seem to be effective.

Some people were cleaning the garbage, brought by the flood at Kalmochan, Thapathali on Wednesday, But, despite disposing of the waste properly, they were dumping it into the river.
