Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and his bodyguard killed

Kathmandu: Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has been killed at his home in Tehran in an Israeli raid.

According to the BBC, the Palestinian group Hamas, controlling Gaza, said that Haniyeh was “killed in a treacherous Zionist raid”. The group said he had participated in the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday

Haniyeh’s death comes hours after Israel says it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike in the Lebanese capital Beirut.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said that one of Haniyeh’s bodyguards was also killed in the strike.

The attacks on two senior Iran-backed militant leaders in the space of 24 hours have raised fears that the region could soon be engulfed in further conflict.

Israel is yet to respond but has previously vowed to “crush” the Palestinian group following the October 7 attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis.
