Kathmandu: A woman has died after her house was buried in a landslide in Baglung. According to Meghnath Gaire, Ward Chairman Khil Kumari Sharma (55 years old) from Titaura of Baglung municipality-7 died in the disaster last night. Sharma had been living alone.

The neighbors informed the people’s representatives and police persons about the disaster this morning. Mid-hill Highway obstructed. Meanwhile, the incessant rainfall has triggered a landslide for some days, obstructing the Mid-Hill Highway.

The landslide occurred at Bayaldanda of Kathekhola rural municipality in the district obstructed the highway, a national pride project. The obstruction has disrupted vehicular movement to and from Purba Rukum, Paschim Rukum, and Jajarkot districts, according to the Deputy Superintendent of Police in the district, Bijay Yadav.

Similarly, Baglung bazaar has been waterlogged due to heavy rains occurred since Wednesday evening. The floods emanated from the highway inundated the marketplaces. Inundation in the marketplace has caused huge losses. As the retention wall of the dumping site was breached, it littered the Kaligandaki corridor, spreading a horrible stench.

The landfill site is on the bank of Kathekhola stream, which got its wall damaged by floods. Although efforts are made to remove the garbage from the roadway, vehicular movement is yet to be normalized.

The retention wall of the landfill site was breached due to a huge pile of garbage soaked with rain. With this, people have been demanding the management of garbage far from the Baglung bazaar. A driver Bir Bahadur Pun said it was sickening to travel by the reeking roads and bazaar. He blamed the municipality had playing down the health of thousands of passengers and local people.
