Kathmandu: The relationship between Canada and India has become stressful.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s comment about the Indian government being behind the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar made the relationship between the two countries stressful.
With the increase of souring relationship, Canada expelled Indian Diplomat Pawan Kumar Roy. India, in return, decided to expel a senior diplomat from the high commission. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, India has directed the diplomat to leave the country within five days.
Previously, PM Trudeau, in the parliament, said, ‘It is not acceptable of foreign government being behind the murder of Canadian citizen in our nation. This is the violation of our sovereignty.’
Nijjar was shot dead in front of a Gurudwara in British Colombia, Canada on 18th June. The Indian government has been calling Nijjar the head of a terrorist and separatist organization. Nijjar’s support has been rebutting the accusation.
This is not the first time that the relationship between India and Canada has turned sour. According to BBC, the relationship between PM Trudeau and Indian PM Narendra Modi was never pleasing. PM Modi has not visited Canada ever since the appointment of Trudeau as the Prime Minister.
PM Trudeau went to India to participate in the G20 convention. But the visual of Trudeau swiftly moving ahead by completing a handshake with PM Modi was seen. The news came that the bilateral discussion between the two leaders did not go well.
PM Modi was dissatisfied with the incidents of the flourishing of Sikh separatist movements in Canada. PM Trudeau said PM Modi for not intervening in the politics of Canada.
While giving a speech at the parliament, PM Trudeau said that he had highlighted the murder of Nijjar at a high level in Delhi.
