Kathmandu: Nepali Mother’s Day is being observed today, paying respect and reverence to the mother and receiving blessing from her.
Mother’s Day, Known as Matatirtha Aunshi in Nepal, has been celebrated since ancient times to revere the mothers who give birth to us. It is also the day of expressing respect to our mothers and recalling their great but mostly painful deeds.
On the day of Mata Tirtha Aunshi, it is customary to wake up early in the morning, gift new clothes, delicious food and sweet to the mother and receive her blessing.
Those who have lost their mothers remember her by performing Sraddha (Hindu ritual to pay homage to dead ancestors) in her memory. A big religious fair is held at Matatirtha temple in Chandragiri Municipality of Kathmandu in memory of the late mothers, where the devotees bathe in Matatirtha pond.
Today, people throng at sweet and fruit shops to buy delicious sweets and fruits for their mothers. Similarly, people go to their house to feed their mothers delectable dishes.
Many people also express their respect for their mothers through social media Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.
