It was back in the 19th century that Melbourne was the largest city. Sydney had been proudly introducing itself as the largest city for the past 100 years.

A study of the federal government’s Centre for Population in January had forecasted that Melbourne would overtake Sydney as Australia’s largest city within ten years. The study showed that migration and birth would be the factors to increase the population of Melbourne.

Whereas, COVID-19 has affected the population growth of the capital of Melbourne, Victoria. A study predicted Victoria, to take lead in the population in Australia in 2026.

But the COVID–19 and lockdowns resulted in a decrement in the population of the capital by 1.6 percent. This projected the possible lead of Victoria to extend till 2031–32.

Sydney’s population has been estimated to reach 6.06 million by 2032-2033. Likewise, the new population of new Melbourne is predicted to reach 6.1 million by that time.

The study shows the population of New South Wales to increase to 9.1 million to become the most populous state by 2032-2033. Similarly, the population of Victoria is predicted to be of around 7.8 million after a decade.
