Privatization of Salt Trade Corporation opposed in Parliament; Criticism over burdening public with price hikes

Kathmandu: The government’s decision to privatize Salt Trading Corporation, which has been selling salt at subsidized rates, has faced opposition in Parliament.

The protest arose in the House of Representatives, claiming that the move would burden citizens who rely on subsidized salt with increased costs.  During Sunday’s session, MP Narayani Sharma voiced her opposition to the decision.

‘By privatizing Salt Trading Corporation, which has been selling salt at subsidized prices, the government is pushing the people into a situation where they can’t even afford salt. By privatizing semi-government bodies, the government is increasing dependency in every sector. Handing over all sectors to the private sector is unacceptable,’ she said.
