According to the BBC, Prevost is the first North American pontiff to be elected as head of the Catholic Church on Thursday. Before being archbishop, Prevost served as a missionary in Peru.
World leaders congratulated the new Pope Leo XIV. The new Catholic Church leader and the cardinals who chose him will celebrate Mass in the Sistine Chapel on Friday.
