Kathmandu: The construction of floodlights and parapets at the Tribhuvan University (TU) Cricket Ground in Kirtipur has been accelerated, after a stern directive from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The Prime Minister sought clarification from the Ministry of Urban Development and representatives of the construction companies on May 5, after the construction of floodlights and parapets at the Tribhuvan University (TU) Cricket Ground in Kirtipur failed to meet its deadline.

PM Oli directed the concerned parties to complete the parapet construction and floodlight installation within two additional months. The construction company has committed to completing the project by the final week of Asar (mid-July).

The project includes installing floodlights and building parapets with a seating capacity of 10,000. The BKOI–KCDC–BG JV was awarded the parapet contract for  437.7 million rupees, while the floodlight installation contract worth 421.9 million rupees was awarded to the Bison–Ishwori JV. The Cabinet had earlier decided that both tasks should be completed by Baisakh 24 (May 7).

Earlier, on Baisakh 4 (April 17), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh had conducted an on-site inspection of the ongoing parapet and floodlight works and expressed confidence that construction would be completed within the stipulated time. He continued monitoring the construction from the ministry in the following days.

After assuming office, as his first decision, Prime Minister Oli announced that international-level parapets and floodlights would be installed at the cricket ground within 100 days.

Presenting the plan and policies of the government on May 2, President Paudel stated that the TU cricket ground would be modernized and that the construction of sports stadiums would involve the participation of all three levels of government and the private sector.
