Ranjita Chaudhary: Unlawful arrest of Resham Chaudhary has harmed trust in federalism, inclusion, and democracy

Kathmandu: Nagarik Unmukti Party’s Chairperson Ranjita Shrestha has said that the party patron, Resham Lal Chaudhary, was arrested based on a civil servant’s vendetta.

Speaking in the House of Representatives, Ranjita objected to what she described as an illegal arrest carried out by state mechanisms acting above the law due to personal grudges. In Parliament, she stated, ‘The unlawful arrest of Resham Chaudhary has harmed the trust in federalism, inclusion, and democracy.’

She urged the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident and provide a clear explanation. Resham was arrested on Baisakh 17 (April 30) when he had arrived at an announcement ceremony of the unification of Janamat Party and Nagarik Unmukti Party held in Kamaladi.

The arrest was carried out after Mahiman Singh Basnet, an official at the Supreme Court, personally wrote a letter and handed it to the police. However, the Supreme Court later issued another letter stating that the original one was not institutional and was unauthorized. Following that clarification, Resham was released five hours later from Dillibazar prison.
