MD Shakya: Challenges in electricity exchange with India

Kathmandu: Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Hitendra Dev Shakya, has stated that there are challenges in electricity exchange with India.

Speaking during the release of the Authority’s white paper, MD Shakya said that having to renew agreements with India every year has created difficulties.

‘When there was pressure on India’s energy system for a while, electricity was available only during solar hours. Now, apart from the 11 hours provided by India’s support, electricity is also being supplied during nighttime hours. Since May 1, an additional 4 hours have been added, making a total of 15 hours available,’ said MD Shakya, ‘However, the need to renew agreements every year, and India’s reluctance to accept projects funded by countries bordering it but without bilateral electricity agreements—these are the kinds of issues that will be challenges for NEA in the days ahead.’
