Kathmandu: Teachers protesting in Kathmandu from across the country have adopted a strategy of continuing both dialogue and protest simultaneously. The protest, which began on Chaitra 20 under the leadership of the Nepal Teachers’ Federation demanding the enactment of an Education Act, continues as of Wednesday.

The Chairperson of the Teachers’ Federation, Laxmikishor Subedi, stated that both dialogue and protest would continue in parallel. He mentioned that protests would continue on Wednesday in the same manner as before and that they would hold talks with the government while continuing the agitation.

As the protest reaches its 29th day, it has entered a decisive phase. In Tuesday’s talks with the government, the Teachers’ Federation presented a nine-point proposal.

Both sides said the talks held until Tuesday night were positive. The proposal from the Federation includes issues such as salary for school staff and ECD teachers, social security fund, remote area allowance, grade adjustment, order of precedence, provision for discounts on teacher treatment in hospitals, salary parity between lower secondary level first-class and secondary level second-class teachers, and concerns of relief teachers.

The government has not yet made its position public on the Federation’s proposal. According to the Federation, the negotiations with the government have now reached a decisive stage. Wednesday’s round of talks may yield some conclusions.
