MPs condemns suppression of protesting teachers in HoR

Kathmandu: Members of Parliament (MPs) have condemned the suppression of protesting teachers in the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting.

Lawmakers from both the opposition and ruling parties criticized the crackdown in Monday’s HoR session. During a clash between teachers and police in New Baneshwor on Sunday, 60 teachers were injured. The main opposition party, the CPN (Maoist Centre), has protested the incident.

CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Janardan Sharma accused the government of resorting to suppression instead of addressing the teachers’ demands. He stated that by forcing teachers to stay in Kathmandu rather than sending them home, the government had also impacted the future of children.

‘When asked, parents said that the government had brought all our teachers to Kathmandu. Now, our children are left wandering the hills, fields, and trees. The matter of education is lost, and we are left worrying about taking on more debt just to treat them,’ Sharma said.

Sharma stated that since the teachers have demanded a law (Act), it should be immediately issued in a way that addresses their legitimate demands. The teachers’ protest have entered its 27th day on Monday.
