Kathmandu: People are celebrating Matatirtha Aunsi, also known as Mother’s Day in Nepal, today. Every year, this festival is celebrated on the new moon day (Aunsi) of the dark fortnight of the month of Baisakh.

People across the country are celebrating this day by offering delicious food to their mothers with deep devotion and reverence. Because of the special expression of love and respect toward mothers, the day is called “Mother’s Day” or “Ama Ko Mukh Herne Din.”

On the occasion of Mother’s Day, a grand fair is being held at Matatirtha, located near Thankot in Kathmandu. Pilgrims are bathing in the sacred Matatirtha pond as part of the rituals.

Those who have lost their mothers are paying tribute by offering “tarpan” (ritual offerings) and “pinda” (rice balls) and are feeding priests with “sidadaan” (ritual food donations), remembering the sacrifices and great deeds of their departed mothers.
