Supreme Court orders return of protesting teachers to classrooms in 3 Days

Kathmandu: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order to the government to create an environment for protesting teachers to return to schools within 3 days.

Advocate Sharwan Kumar Chaudhary and others had filed a writ petition on Chaitra 10 (March 23) against various bodies of the Government of Nepal, stating that the teachers’ protest had thrown students’ futures into uncertainty. In response to Advocate Chaudhary’s writ, a single bench of Justice Nahkul Subedi issued the interim order on Thursday.

The order states: “The opposing bodies must take appropriate and necessary decisions to immediately address the legitimate and constitutionally valid demands of the protesting teachers, and ensure that, within three days from the receipt of this order, the protesting teachers return to schools and resume regular teaching activities.”

The teachers had been protesting in Kathmandu for some time, putting forth various demands including those related to services and benefits. This order from the Supreme Court appears to require that their protest be suspended for the time being.
