Kathmandu: The international Lumbini Cup women’s football tournament, which began in Nepalgunj, has brought the Nepalgunj stadium back to life.

The Nepalgunj Stadium had remained idle for about six years since the 8th National Games. The stadium was renovated for the Lumbini Cup International Invitational Women’s Football tournament, which revived sports activities in the stadium, says Banke District Football Association Chair Bhojraj Shahi.

If sports tournaments can be held regularly, Nepalgunj Stadium will continue to draw sports lovers and enthusiasts. The decoration of the stadium had started a few months ago, targeting the Lumbini Cup women’s football tournament.

The stadium now also boasts a green football ground with grass growth due to regular watering, said Jaya Narayan Shah, the chief executive of the Lumbini Cup women’s football tournament organizing agency, Antaral. Bhim Oli, the former chair of the Midwest Sports Development Committee, said that after the competition started, the stadium became lively.

Eight teams, including a team from Siliguri of India, are participating in the Lumbini Cup International Invitational Women’s Football tournament, which started on Friday in collaboration with the Banke District Football Association. The winner of the tournament will receive Rs 505,555 in cash prize while the runner-up will walk home with Rs 250,000, a trophy, and a medal.
