Gham Power signs contract with UNIDO to install Nepal’s largest battery storage project

Kathmandu: Gham Power, with its partners Practical Action and Swanbarton, have officially been awarded a project by the United Nations Industrial Development.

Organization (UNIDO) to install one of the largest energy storage systems in Nepal, with a total battery capacity of 4MWh will help industries and businesses minimize their diesel consumption and be on a path to decarbonization through the development of smart grids.

The initiative was launched by UNIDO – United Nations Industrial Development Organization Director-General Gerd Müller, in the presence of ambassadors from five different countries where other pioneering projects will be undertaken.

Attending the ceremony on behalf of Nepal were Nepali Ambassador Bharat Kumar Regmi, Gham Power CEO Anjal Niraula, and teams from Swanbarton and Practical Action.

The pioneering project is set to transform industrial energy use by replacing polluting diesel generators with a large-scale battery storage system powered by solar energy.

By shifting away from costly and harmful fuel sources, the project will significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2,800 tonnes and displace 1,000 kiloliters of diesel over the next 25 years, helping to build a cleaner and more sustainable industrial future.

With AI-powered energy optimization, the system will reduce energy costs, improve reliability, and support sustainable energy use across industries. This is just the beginning, as the project is set to grow, providing a game-changing solution for Nepal’s energy transition.

The project marks a significant milestone in the evolution of solar and storage innovation, and Gham Power is proud to be one of the five projects selected globally to demonstrate AI-driven energy solutions as part of the Accelerate-to-Demonstrate (A2D) Facility by UNIDO.
