Bishwa Prakash Sharma: We need a constitutional amendment-not a monarchy

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress General Secretary and Lawmaker Bishwa Prakash Sharma has stated that the Shah dynasty kings lacked the qualities required to function as constitutional monarchs.

Speaking in the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting on Monday, Lawmaker Sharma said there is no alternative to a democratic republic. MP Sharma also refuted claims that there were stable governments during the monarchy.

‘During the 30 years of the Panchayat era, there were 16 different governments. Even King Gyanendra, when he took charge, formed four different governments. Therefore, the claim made by Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) members that the monarchy ensured stability is incorrect,’ said Lawmaker Sharma.

He said, ‘Bringing back a dozens of king does not guarantee stability. If we truly want a stable government for five years, what we need is a constitutional amendment—not a monarchy.’

MP Sharma also stated that bringing back a king would not guarantee good governance.

‘Good governance does not come just by reinstating a king. Historian Navaraj Subedi himself has documented this in a chapter of history. King Gyanendra’s demand for a 50% share in Omega watches led the Swiss watch company to withdraw from its investment,’ he added.
