Kathmandu: A regional aircraft and a military helicopter have collided midair near Washington, DC, the United States.

According to Aljazeera, the collision raised fears of mass casualties and ceased air traffic at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

A PSA Airlines Bombardier “CRJ700” jet hit a Black Hawk helicopter “Sikorsky UH-60.”  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), late on Wednesday, said the aircraft was en route from Wichita, Kansas.

According to the BBC, the jet was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and the military helicopter comprised three US Army soldiers during the time of the collision.

Issuing a statement, the aviation agency said the FAA and NTSB would investigate and the NTSB would lead the process President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on a “terrible accident.”

Police and fire services said a multi-agency search and rescue operation was underway in the Potomac River.
