Kathmandu: The Tharu community is celebrating this year’s Maghi festival in Tudikhel of Kathmandu for two days.
Chairperson of Tharu Welfare Assembly and Coordinator of Tharu National Maghi Festival Main Celebration Committee, Premil Lal Chaudhary, said the Maghi festival was being observed on January 13 and 14.
‘We have been celebrating the Maghi festival in Kathmandu since 2059 BS. It is the new year of the Tharu community,’ he mentioned.
Zita Marna’s program and blood donation will also be managed on the first day while the Maghi festival on the second day. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to inaugurate the indigenous festival.
This year’s festival is going to be observed under the theme ‘Our campaign is to preserve, enhance and promote Tharu culture, calls for proportional inclusive access to all’.
The festival would have around 100 stalls. Tharu dances like Maghauta, Sakhiya, Jhumra, and Ragani as well as songs would be performed during the festival.
Similarly, cuisines of the Tharu community—Dhikri, Andik Bhat, fish, meat pig, pigeon, Ghogi, crab, and Macular would be made available at the festival.
Dhakiya, Dhakli, Delwa, Bhauka, Bhauki, Deliya as well as other handicraft goods made by the Tharu community would be put on display.
