Home Minister Lekhak stresses on constructing safe buildings for development of safe settlement

Kathmandu: Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, has pointed out the need to construct safe buildings for the development of safe settlements.

Addressing the ‘Learning Exchange Workshop’ organized by USAID on Thursday, Home Minister Lekhak said that Nepal has made timely revisions to Building Code, learning a lesson from the Gorkha earthquake. He emphasized on the need for capacity building of technical human resources at every local level for the effective implementation of revised Building Code.

The Home Minister mentioned that the constitution has given special responsibility to local levels in the context of disaster management and three-tier governments have been doing their own responsibilities accordingly. ‘Different organizations of government and non-government sectors are joining hands to fulfill their responsibilities in disaster management sector’ said Minister Lekhak.

Minister Lekhak said  “USAID’s Tayar Nepal-Improved Disaster Risk Management Project, has been making significant contribution in disaster risk reduction and management sector in federation, provinces and local levels’. He thanked the US government for its support through ‘Tayar Nepal’ project and expected further cooperation in disaster risk reduction and management sector in days to come.
