Kathmandu: Newar Community has been celebrating Saparu known as ‘Gai Jatra’ on a grand scale nationwide.

King Pratap Malla began the tradition of celebrating the Gaijatra to commemorate his bereaved queen on the loss of their son. People disguised themselves as cows and paraded around in memory of their deceased relatives.

There is a tradition to donate milk, fruits, bread, curd, and fruits to the participants of Gai Jatra. According to religious belief, it is believed that departed souls would cross Vaitarani holding the cow’s tail.

Likewise, humor and satirical performances are also performed against social distortions at the festival.
