Janai Purnima Celebration (Photo Feature)

Kathmandu: Hindu devotees have been celebrating Rakshyabandhan and Janai Purnima on a grand scale nationwide.

On the special day of Shrawan Shukla, the followers of the Vedic Sanatan Religion, take a holy bath and tie Rakshyabandhan on their wrists.

There is a tradition of taking a bath in rivers, lakes, and ponds in the morning of the full moon and tying the enchanted threads “Rakshasutra” (Dori ) on the wrist of the priest “Guru Purohit”. There is a belief that the Rakshasutra protects one from negative elements.

Likewise, priests tie the Rakshasutra by enchanting the mantra on the wrists, which is called Rakshyabandhan or Dori.  According to Vedic tradition, the Rakshasutra symbolizes, strength.

Brahmin and Chettri, who wore janai (Scared thread) also change their janai on this day.
