Kathmandu: Kakarbhitta, serving as the major transit point in eastern Nepal, has been opened for people from third countries.

The transit point along the Nepal-India border in the Jhapa district was closed for tourists from third countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mohan Pariyar, the Chief of Immigration Office, Kakarbhitta, said it has been reopened for them after four years.

Earlier, there was a reservation from the Indian side to allow entry for tourists from third countries, though Nepal had already withdrawn the provisions restricting the arrivals of foreign tourists enforced by the outbreak of COVID-19. The Office was informed about the reopening on August 1 of the border by the Indian side.

Since then, people from the third world have started arriving here via India and departures from Nepal have also commenced. It is noted that tourism entrepreneurs were concerned over the long closure of the Kakarbhitta point for the arrivals of visitors from third countries.

With the withdrawal of the restrictions, citizens from over a dozen nations including the UK, the US, and Switzerland have entered Nepal via India and the vice-versa movement is going on.
