KMC backs off from New Road; Footpath expansion in limbo

Kathmandu: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has backed off from the work of expanding the footpath in New Road.

KMC backed off due to the increasing demonstration of the businessmen and locals. KMC has even taken back its dozer. With this, the footpath expansion work is now in limbo. The left side of the New Road area has already been dug but the work has been halted.

The footpath expansion work resumed last Wednesday. But, the continuous protests of the locals halted the work. The locals have been protesting since Friday. They have even stayed in tents to continue their protest.

KMC was compelled to remove its dozer after the discussion with the locals failed to reach an agreement. Ward Number 22 Chairperson Chini Kaji Maharjan is also against the expansion of the footpath.

Earlier, KMC filed a case in the High Court Patan due to the arising conflict. After the verdict of the Court in favor of KMC, the footpath expansion was resumed again.
