64 thousand kgs of Chinese garlic seized near Mohattari’s Nepal-India border

Kathmandu: India has seized a huge amount of Chinese garlic in the border area, that was being smuggled through Nepal.

The Indian media stated that the Commissioner of Customs in Mohattarai seized 640 tonnes of Chinese Garlic on Thursday. The news published in the Jagaran mentioned that 8 tractors, carrying 64 thousand garlic, were seized with the help of SSB officials.

It has been mentioned that the seized garlic is worth around 1 crore 34 lakhs Indian Rupees. The Indian government had prohibited Chinese garlic stating it as dangerous for the health.

Indian officials said that the smugglers tried to take advantage of the open Nepal-India border for the smuggling. They said that they would take strict action against the smugglers. The exact numbers of the arrested have not been mentioned in the news.

The smuggling of garlic has increased in India with the hike in garlic’s price. The price of one kilogram of garlic in the Indian Market has reached upto Rs. 400 per kg.
