Kathmandu: Today is Kartik Duadashi ‘Dhanteras.’ There is a ritual of purchasing utensils of gold, silver, copper, steel, etc. Dhanteras is regarded as one of the auspicious days to do shopping for Deepawali. This day is celebrated by buying various metallic things.

Especially in the Mithila tradition, there is a ritual of beginning the Deepawali by buying and worshipping metallic products. People start lighting bright lights in homes and worship metallic products and Goddesses of Wealth Laxmi from today.

Worshipping Goddess Laxmi is one of the highly significant days of Deepawali. Hence, the ritual of buying new utensils begins to make Goddess Laxmi happy. People light the lamp and begin the worship of Dhanteras in the evening. And this is the beginning of Deepawali.

With this, there is a crowd of people in the shops selling copper, brass, and bronze utensils. In Mithila tradition, people believe that those utensils purchased on this day will last long, good omen, and attract prosperity.

This festival is known as ‘Diwali’ in Mithila. It is also known as ‘Yampanchak.’ Based on Mithila Panchanga and Bidhyapati Panchanga, dates, days, and festivals are finalized in Mithila tradition. Both the Panchangas have mentioned Dhanteras today. Dhanvantri, Jayanti which is observed on Kartik Krishna Treyodashi, is also celebrated today.
