Woman undergoing abortion dies; Relatives question legitimacy of Meri Stop Clinic

Dhangadhi: A woman, undergoing an abortion procedure, has died in Meri Stop Community Clinic.

Preeti Thapa (34 years old), a resident of Ward-12  Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City lost her life. Her relatives said that Thapa was sent home after some medication. Thapa’s uncle Gopal Airee said that the clinic had called her and given her medicine.

Airee said, ‘Meri Stop Clinic had given few medicines to my niece for abortion. They had asked her to visit again. They gave medicine but something was not right. Either they gave the wrong medicine or overdosed. Preeti could not bear the pain. The clinic personnel took her to Seti Hospital. She died there.’

‘My niece was healthy. This is the carelessness of the clinic,’ Airee said, ‘The clinic was sending her for X-ray in one direction and for medicine in another direction. This is the weakness of the clinic. The clinic must bear all the responsibility for her death. And we demand serious action against the clinic.’

Preeti’s relative Kuber Khadka demanded strict action against the owner of the clinic, who illegally conducted the abortion. Khadka said that the private clinic must answer from where it gained a license for abortion.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kuldeep Chand, District Police Office, Kalilali said, ‘Preeti was taken to the Seti Hospital after her condition became critical and she died at the hospital at 4:30 pm yesterday. The clinic is in the name of Ashika Ojha Joshi and her husband Binod Joshi had been operating it.’

The relatives surrounded the District Police Office after the death of Preeti. According to the Police, Preeti went to the clinic for an abortion on Thursday. And the clinic gave her medicine.
