Fake refugee scandal: Police to submit investigation report today

Kathmandu: The report of investigation into the Bhutanese refugee scandal has been prepared.

A special team of Nepal Police has prepared the report by midnight, an official said. ‘We have prepared the report till 2 am and will submit it to the government attorney’s office today,’ the official said.

The police have recommended the prosecution of 32 people, including those arrested. Police have accused former deputy prime minister, minister, secretary and intermediaries of sending Nepalis to the US as fake refugees. According to the sources, the police have recommended that the accused be prosecuted for four offences.

It has been 58 days since the first arrest was made in this case. The investigation report will possibly be submitted today as the public prosecutor’s office should file the charge sheet in the court within 60 days of the arrest.

Police have so far arrested 16 people and listed 16 others as absconders. Former home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa’s son Prateek and his security advisor Indrajit Rai’s son Neeraj Rai are also absconding.

Likewise, former deputy prime minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former home minister Bal Krishna Khand, former home minister Ram Bahadur Thapa Badal’s security advisor Indrajit Rai and Top Bahadur’s son Sandip have been arrested so far.
