US urges China to show restraint after military exercise

Kathmandu: The United States of America has urged China to show restraint after Beijing launches military exercise around Taiwan.

The US department of state has urged China to show restraint and not to overreact to a meeting between Taiwanese president and US House speaker.

A state department spokesperson said that America was ‘monitoring Beijing’s actions closely’, adding US had ‘sufficient resources and capabilities in the region to ensure peace and stability and to meet our national commitments’.

The spokesperson also said that the US is always open to talks with China. ‘Our channels of communication with the PRC (China) are open and we have consistently urged restraint and no change to the status quo,’ the official was quoted as saying by AFP.

On Saturday, China’s PLA launched a three-day military exercise around Taiwan  amid anger in Beijing over the meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy  and Taiwan president Tsai Ing-Wen in California.

China has dubbed the exercise as ‘United Sharp Sword’, describing it as ‘a serious warning against the Taiwan separatist forces’ collusion with external forces, and a necessary move to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity’.

PLA’s military exercise would focus on China’s capabilities to seize control of sea, air and information. The exercise came a day after Tsai returned from a 10-day visit to Central America and the US.
